Brown University

Brown University, founded in 1764, is the seventh oldest university in the United States. This Ivy League institution is rich in tradition and sets a standard for excellence that is recognized throughout the world. The Brown Medical School first granted the MD degree in 1975 and has since grown into one of our nation’s premier institutions, having been recently recognized in the U.S. News and World Report as a top-ranked medical school specializing in Primary Care (1991 and 1992).

The Brown medical community includes eight hospital affiliations with clinical programs that compliment the strong academic and research base at the university.

Memorial Hospital serves as one of the primary teaching sites for medical students, and thus, our housestaff is afforded the opportunity to teach as well as to be stimulated by these students. The Providence Veterans Administration Medical Center is another clinical site for our residents.

The Brown University campus is located on the East Side of Providence, RI, approximately six miles from Memorial Hospital. As graduate students of the university, our housestaff are invited to take advantage of the many learning and cultural activities that occur on campus. The housestaff have full access to the extensive library, athletic and cultural facilities of Brown University.

The major hospital affiliates of Brown University are closely linked academically, and medical housestaff are invited to participate in elective opportunities at all of the sister institutions.
