The Memorial Hospital of Rhode Island Memorial Hospital of Rhode Island is a major academic teaching hospital within the Brown Medical School system and a full-service community hospital providing medical care for residents of the Blackstone Valley and East Bay regions of Rhode Island and Bristol County, Massachusetts. Memorial's close relationship with Brown University has provided the opportunity to create a truly unique learning environment where the best that an academic institution has to offer is combined with all that is wonderful about the community hospital.
The hospital maintains an intimate and nurturing environment for both patient care and education, which is complemented by a network of ambulatory care facilities throughout the Blackstone Valley and East Bay region. Thus, Memorial Hospital is able to provide primary care in the community, where it is needed, as well as to provide hospital support with inpatient care when necessary.
Our Department of Medicine has many distinguished faculty who hold appointments at Brown Medical School and work on a full time basis to educate medical students and housestaff physicians. Members of the Hospital's Department of Medicine currently attract three and one-half million dollars of competitive grant funding yearly and carry out a variety of population-based and laboratory research programs which are available for resident participation. The active medical staff also include a large group of expert clinicians in private practice who volunteer their services to medical education. Together, these faculty create a complimentary staff of expert clinicians and scientists.
The greatest strength of the Memorial Hospital is its housestaff. True to its Ivy League tradition of excellence and diversity, the residents and interns set and maintain the highest standards for education and patient care. In addition to the Categorical Internal Medicine Residency Program Program at Memorial Hospital, the institution also supports Brown University residency programs in Family Medicine, Pathology, Surgery and Dermatology.
There are also active subspecialty fellowship and research programs in Infectious Disease, Hematology/Oncology, Pulmonary/Critical Medicine, Endocrinology, Occupational Medicine, Geriatrics and Cardiology. There are allied programs in Nursing, Podiatry, EMT/Paramedic, Laboratory Technology, Nursing Anesthesia, Pharmacy, Clinical Pharmacology and Physical Therapy.
The hospital also provides an excellent on-site medical library with current resources in all major medical areas, updated monthly journals in all major specialty and subspecialty areas and electronic information retrieval. Private on-call quarters and an on-site exercise room are also provided.
