Conferences

Housestaff are provided with a comprehensive conference schedule which forms the foundation of the academic curriculum, which is designed to run throughout the three-year training period.

This includes:

Attending Rounds at Memorial:

Six days a week each medical team meets with a member of the faculty attending staff for teaching and patient based discussion.

Morning Report:

At 8:00 each weekday morning interns, second and third year residents meet with the Chief Resident, Program Director, Chief of Medicine and other faculty to review and discuss illustrative and challenging cases on the medical service. On every Wednesday the focus of this conference is primarily devoted to outpatient issues (“Ambulatory Care Morning Report”). This conference forms the centerpiece for the academic curricula and provides case-based management and topics discussion between peers.

Noon Conference:

Three days a week at Memorial, core internal medicine topics are presented as lectures, seminars or case sessions as part of monthly recurring thematic sessions. Lunch is provided. A  Friday noontime is scheduled for either Internal Medicine board review or housestaff meetings.

Journal Club:

A weekly journal club focusing on evidence-based medical practice and the critical analysis of the medical literature is facilitated by faculty members of the Division of General Internal Medicine. Medical residents prepare and present articles for critique and analysis with their peers.

Ambulatory Care:

Conference: Each afternoon, before Continuity Clinical Practice, a faculty member facilitates case-based discussion around primary care issues in the Internal Medicine Residency clinical practice. These discussions are resident motivated and resident run. They provide a comfortable format in which topics are discussed and presented.

Grand Rounds:

Medical Grand Rounds are held weekly on Wednesday mornings at 10:00 a.m. at Memorial, as are Family Practice, Pediatric and Surgical Grand Rounds.

Ethics Conference:

Monthly, a member of the Brown University ethics faculty is present to facilitate discussion regarding a patient or ethical dilemma encountered by housestaff or faculty. This occurs both as part of inpatient attending rounds and as a separate ambulatory conference in conjunction with the family care housestaff.
