Overview
The Categorical Internal Medicine Residency Program at Memorial Hospital of Rhode Island has evolved in concert with the many changes now occurring in our health care system. Well ahead of national trends, the Alpert Medical School of Brown University and Memorial Hospital realized the paramount importance of training physicians for careers in Primary Care/General Internal Medicine. Primary care physicians, however, must be more than just “gatekeepers.” Rather, the true primary care internist must develop the skills and knowledge requisite to dealing expertly with the multifactorial problems of the exceptionally ill patient, both in the hospital and in the office. Further, a primary care physician must also become expert in the maintenance of health, the screening for disease and the coordination of a patient’s total care. Evidence-based medical practice and learner-centered learning are our goals for our medical housestaff. After formal residency training, it is incumbent upon practicing physicians to maintain their own skills and to keep abreast of new knowledge. The learning habits and learning skills that are developed during residency are what allows physicians to stay current. Memorial Hospital of Rhode Island is dedicated to helping our housestaff cultivate these talents. The ultimate goal of Memorial Hospital of Rhode Island is to provide our housestaff with an outstanding program that fosters their development into expert, well-rounded clinicians able to care for patients in the wide variety of settings where health care will be delivered in the future.
